Bender type: Nonbender
A tall and fit man, Akitaru stands at 6'2 and possesses a rather fit physique. Over his torso can be found a number of scars from cuts and scrapes he'd received from his military service.
Akitaru’s sense of morality can be considered odd. He had no issues stealing, beating or deceiving the people he wishes to steal from. Though he finds it wrong to simply kill innocent targets or betray allies who placed his trust in him. So he dislikes working with people who go against his beliefs. Or Wastelanders in general, Aki still maintains his strong prejudice against anyone born in the Southern Wastes. Especially since he still has nightmares from the day his father’s farm was raided. The man is often controlled by his greed to take risks and finds himself in dangerous situations.
He has no issues killing people who are clearly worse than him (dangerous Wastelanders, serial killers, assassins). But prefers to keep the murder in general to a strict minimum since he believes killing people has a funny way of catching up to you. Not killing anyone also makes you less likely to be a priority for authorities. Even though he hates to admit, Akitaru certainly has a heart and a desire to protect his close allies. Though he’s found himself keeping these people at arm’s length or simply cutting ties with them since he’s afraid to see more comrades die. Because of his attitude towards partners and killing, the man doesn’t want to join any of the factions currently.
Aki is rather proud of his skills and accomplishments, having something of an ego from it. But he’s learned that cockiness is quite deadly. From his experience, dating and relationships are rather problematic. He finds that it distracts him from his work. Rather than the occasional midnight stand, Akitaru doesn’t worry about women too much. Preferring to focus on his career.
Akitaru was born in a Southern Earth Republic village, the first and only son to a rather successful farmer named Shachi. Shachi was far too busy managing his business and his profits rather than his family. Main reason Shachi was even concerned with raising his son was because having a man to take over his business so he could retire. Akitaru’s mother was just some poor good looking woman he decided would be a good plaything for him.
Touka had been the only one who really cared about her son. She knew Shachi didn’t love either of them, but her current life was better than in her old village that was constantly victimized by a brutal bandit tribe. Touka’s brother was a soldier in the Earth Republic Army so he could fight people like that. Unfortunately he’d been killed in a terrorist bombing. Touka had always told Akitaru stories of his uncle’s amazing adventures to make the country safer for everyone.
By the time the boy was 7, he was hoping to leave home and enlist in the army. Akitaru also desired to be a strong earthbender just like Uncle Ayato. He’d often amuse himself by pretending to be a soldier on important missions and couldn’t refrain from trying to bend any stone or pebble he saw. Shachi was quick to dash these admirable dreams, wanting his son to be rich enough to support him in his old age. He wanted a successful businessman, not some forgettable hero.
After turning 8, Akitaru’s dreams of being an earthbender began to die when it was becoming clear to his mother that he wasn’t a bender. But he didn’t let go of his dream to be a soldier. Unfortunately his village was the victim of a rather brutal raid from a wastelander tribe who’d been hiding on the Earth Republic’s southern borders, hearing word of Shachi’s successful farm. It was the main target of their attack. The crops and produce were stolen while literally everyone in their way was killed. Touka had instructed her son to hide, trying to distract the invaders from him.
Akitaru might’ve died if an army troop didn’t arrive to fend off the Wastelanders. Once the battle was over, soldiers had been searching for survivors. One had found the boy shaking under his bed with immense fear in his heart. It was quite a surprise to him that Shachi’s farm any survivors since it was littered with corpses. Many of them were so mangled they couldn’t be identified, but it was obvious the boy’s parents were dead.
The 8 year old was thrown into a large orphanage specifically made for children’s families who had been killed by Wastelanders, the army found it worthwhile to recruit orphans from places like these since it was only natural they’d have a strong amount of hate for those who hailed from the Southern Wastes. Akitaru was absolutely no exception to his rule. Feeling nothing but contempt for the people who took his mother away from them. The incident and the army’s desire to recruit orphans like him had made his childhood dream far more likely to come true. Akitaru grew up wanting to be a strong soldier capable of stopping and killing all Wastelanders from touching his homeland. The nation’s hatred of them had only enhanced his animosity.
Akitaru had begun his enlistment at 17 and began his training. The teen had learned a useful set of skills including archery, crafting, basic stealth tactics, tracking, first aid/medical training, trapping and of course combat. He’d begun serving under a platoon made up of wastelander orphans like himself, he quickly felt a strong sense of comradery for his fellow soldiers.
For 3 years, Akitaru been a loyal soldier since he absolutely believed in the cause to defend the Southern borders. Not having much interest in moving up north to deal with bandits or terrorists. Killing wastelanders was honestly one of the reasons he got up in the morning. As time went on, Akitaru had gotten his battle scars and medals for his service, he noticed more and more of his comrades began to die. It just felt like for every raid they’d stopped, two more would occur successfully. It was clear the enemy was resilient and resourceful. Determined to survive and continue their way of life.
After he turned 20, Akitaru had become disillusioned. Beginning to believe that this war wouldn’t end any time soon. He’d quickly lost count of how many friends he’d lost. He was too young to have so many dead friends. Following a mission that had his platoon chase down a wastelander tribe that ended in absolute disaster, Akitaru had decided this life just wasn’t for him anymore.
The male had completed his service and left the army, trying to find the next chapter of his life. Aki had caught word of a rumor involving a collection of stolen treasure. Apparently a bandit group had robbed a noble from Omashu of his family’s riches they’d owned for decades. The bandits had been chased by the police by an army platoon and had to hide their stolen loot. No one had been able to find the treasure of the Lau family since.
Captivated by the idea of accomplishing a feat bandits had been unable to accomplish for 5 years, Akitaru had taken it upon himself to find these riches. After a rather dangerous and long adventure, the male had successfully found the treasure. He’d finally found his new calling in life: treasure hunting. The skills he’d acquired from the military had made all of this highly possible.
The idea of traveling all over and finding forgotten riches had certainly seemed amazing. If he played his cards right, he’d have more money than he’d know what to do with. Akitaru wouldn’t admit it, but his love of money was clearly inherited from his father. His greed got the better of him since he’d begun stealing whenever he’d found a good opportunity. He never killed any innocents he’d robbed of course and tried to leave people with enough to survive when he stole from travelers.
His desire to not kill people and experience with losing allies had convinced him he’d better off alone for the most part. But his desire to experience the camaraderie he felt in the military often compelled him to occasionally work with people or even the rare apprentice he took in once in a while. He disliked many bandits and crime families while he still hated all wastelanders with a passion, not leaving him with options for allies. Naturally since he was in the Earth Republic, Akitaru had been witness to much chaos and strife. The male had tried his best to avoid such conflict again, another reason why he preferred to work alone.
This had been Aki’s life for at least 4 years, exploring and taking whatever looked expensive. Honestly his current occupation might’ve made his life just as hazardous as military life. But at least he had far more to show for it. Selling his riches and managing to put it into a rather large bank account had been a little tricky, but it definitely happened. The male had learned that situations with a lot of risk tended to have a lot of reward as well. He had considered continuing his career in Ba Sing Se where the richest people in the nation could be found. But the capital had been where the army had most of it’s power and the crime families who managed to work here were quite infamous and feared across the land.
Another place had caught Aki’s attention, Republic City. An immensely violent place where many dangerous factions could be found. The male had thought such a city would be so distracted by it’s own inner turmoil that he’d be able to rob it blind. He figured he could get his next big score here, he thought he could manage the same feat in Ba Sing Se. So he could someday retire in his endless riches for the rest of his life. So Republic City was his next stop.

Akitaru's main weapon of choice, The Compound Bow's design allows him to fire arrows with less effort than he'd need to use when shooting with a long or recurve bow. It also provides more accuracy by being less sensitive to sudden changes in humidity and temperature. While the bow is made from metal, it is outfitted with a composite frame to prevent it from being metalbended as long as the composite frame is not damaged.
Aki's arrows are all made with different purposes in mind, hence why his bow is quite important during combat. He possesses electric arrows that discharge quick surges of electricity during combat, explosive arrows that provide the same force as concussion grenades, poison tipped arrows that cause enemies different ailments such as slowed movement, nausea, incredible pain and disorientation. Of course he still wields regular arrows as well. Akitaru's arrows are all made of composite and can be found in his quiver, his regular arrows have blunt tips to prevent lethal damage while his electric and poison tipped ones definitely do.
Always at his side can be found a number of canisters filled with poisonous gases and adhesive foam meant to weaken and restrain foes. Aki also wields flashbang grenades and smoke bombs for blinding enemies. The canisters he uses have gases for causing nausea, slowed movement and tear gas as well.
The gauntlets release powerful shocks during his attacks, Aki favors them as his main weapons for close combat even though he greatly prefers long ranged combat. Though he enjoys using the electricity to knock people out cold.
This is one of Aki's only weapons purely made of metal and he only uses it if he's out of arrows or his bow is damaged. He enjoys using it's blunt force to leave targets unconscious in one quick blow, he finds it a fairly reliable backup when there aren't any metalbenders around.
Another weapon forged from metal in his possession is a collapsible bo staff, he doesn't use it often out of fear of finding it twisted around his neck. Though Aki does enjoy hitting foes with it while using his gauntlet to electrically charge it.
Deciding to increase his arsenal, Aki made himself a set of composite throwing knives coated in the same poison as some of his arrows. He conceals these and uses them when he's backed into a corner.
