Watertribe

Both the northern and southern tribes, which had become completely united in rule after Avatar Korra opened the spirit portals lived relatively peacefully over the years after Korra’s death. Even during the Rebellion they were so far separated from the rest of the world that it affected them very little for a time. However, after Avatar Kiryi’s death, her acolytes decided to go out into the other nations in order to expand her cause; or rather their version of it. The already deluded desires of Kiryi became so much worse than they were.

Upon coming to the southern tribe, the followers of Kiryi took direct advantage of the strife between the humans and the spirits there. Specifically, the spirit wilds that had begun to form in the southern tribe made agriculture and the herding of animals far more difficult than it already was. These travelers saw this discord and decided to use it as their stepping stone into the tribe. The northern tribe, however, had little areas for them to prey upon and remained primarily unchanged by it all while their sister tribe suffered.

During the destruction of the south the Northern Water Tribe cut all ties with their southern brothers and sister and left them to their own devices, fearing that the actions of the Southern Tribe may be repeated in the north should contact be kept up. Though any refugees from the remnants of the Southern Water Tribe were accepted after the pirate warlords of the Wastelanders became a threat.

With the relative peace in the aftermath of the rebellion the Northern Water Tribe flourished. They did not have to worry about attacks from their southern kinsmen as the spirits now violently guarded the spirit portals against any wastelander incursions and they themselves had long ago learnt not to disturb the spirits unless absolutely necessary.

Education and progress was the way of the world for the Northern Water Tribe, with great academies and universities being built. Everything from architecture to military tactics to advanced forms of water bending was studied and taught to any who could pay, leading to the nation becoming extremely wealthy and technologically advanced. Whilst mecha-suits, bloodbending and other such weapons of war were outlawed as with the most of the world, their development and study continued in the controlled environments of engineering colleges and military academies.

This being said, the Northern Water Tribe is no paradise. A strict caste system has arisen with several powerful families gaining monopolies on the various aspects of the Water Tribe’s economy and education system. The son of a soldier will be a soldier just as the son of a mechanic will be a mechanic… The only way to escape this system is to rise high enough in your field to be allowed to retire or to emigrate to another nation, hence the large number of Northern Water Tribe applicants for the Republic City Citizenship Project.

Water Tribe schools offer a broad network of fields citizens can study. Culinary, music, art, literature, theater, medicine, architecture, world history, agriculture, animal study, engineering and more. Plantbending is quite useful in some of these fields as it’s used to rapidly grow plants sold for consumption and medicine creation.

The Water Tribe military works hard to defend their home since it’s considered the cornerstone of knowledge and education in the world, making it the most important nation in their eyes. Their military has an easier time doing this than the Fire Nation and Earth Republic since they don’t need to fret over Wastelander attacks. But they must occasionally defend their ships from Earth Republic pirates and prevent mobs from the same nation from spreading their black markets to the Water Tribe’s borders.

Both the northern and southern tribes, which had become completely united in rule as the portals allowed for easy access between the two, lived relatively peacefully over the years.

The southern tribe tried for some time to get the spirits to live somewhere else but they refused. After their refusal became too unbearable, the people decided to resort to drastic measures. Deciding that if they couldn’t have the land, no one could, they gather all the waterbenders and earthbenders, though few, they had and began to devastate the land that they lived in. Ripping the vines and trees the wilds created from the ground and sending all of what little soil they had below the ice, they made it impossible for any flora to develop. As such, what little fauna they had died out very quickly.

Upon the devastation of the land, the spirits quickly moved out as well as most of the people. The land had become a wasteland and was thus referred to as either the Wastelands or simply the Wastes. Those that remained in the land were called Wastelanders and are generally despised by all because of the actions they have chosen to take. As they cannot grow their own food or food for animals either, they decided to take up piracy and raid the nearby nations to stay alive, commonly using tactics such as bloodbending to do so. They view it as what needs to be done, but the other nations, including their sister tribe in the north, would enjoy nothing more than their destruction.

Over time, The Wastelanders had become more experienced in combat and were able to grow in population. Able to become recurring threats for the Southern Air Temple and the Southern region of the Earth Republic. They were especially deadly when defending their homelands and the surrounding sea, explaining why Earth Republic Army missions into the wastes were met with catastrophic results. These ill-fated attacks are why Wastelanders are immensely xenophobic and kill anyone who isn't one of their own on their own land. Though some people born in the wastes who no longer desire such a violent life quietly immigrate. This is very necessary since Wastelanders often hate people who wish to leave and refer to them as traitors.

Another reason people wish to leave is caused by the misogynistic culture of the Wastes. Women were sought as breeding machines so tribes could increase their numbers, though some female wastelanders were able to prove their strength and were allowed to be proper raiders with the men. Women from the Southern Air Temple and Earth Republic were taken from raids just like food and other vital supplies and were used as slaves for either easy labor or breeding so Wastelanders were able to possess more benders of the earth, air and even fire due to the rare firebender they found. The children born from these acts are naturally raised from an early age to fight, kill and survive. They are taught that it's right for them to murder and steal whatever they need to live from neighboring nations. The Southern Wastelanders are easily the modern era’s global threat, world leaders certainly fear a full blown war with them and are content with merely defending their borders for now.
