Bender type: Earthbender
Daru is a man of two minds. While being loud and aggressive, he can also be soft spoken and gentle. He has little tolerance for those who play fast and loose with other peoples safety and has no love for anytype of thief, bandit, or swindler. A loner by nature his fatal flaw is a pretty smile attached to the black widow.
Daru grew up in the city of Omashu, the city of two lovers. For much of his young life it would have appeared that his life followed a sweeter tale. Born to a water bender and an earth bender life was slow for young Daru. Thought to be a gifted earth bender by many of his neighbors and local vendors, Daru had other ideas for his powers. He had been bending since the age of four and to him it was his own choice on how to use his bending.Roaming the streets with his friends he saw fit to use his "gift" to annoy the local strays and anyone whom he deemed worthy of a good prank. By the age of seven Daru had more notoriety for his childish antics and silver tongue than the earth bending he used to pull off his acts of vandalism. Daru paid no mind to the talk of others. He was young and foolish and to him their was no thought of anything but the here and now.
Daru was 10 now. His birthday had come and he was the special little man. It was time to enjoy the warm glow of the sun in his favorite spot just outside the city walls. His parents had taken him to the waterfall for an afternoon of leisure and Daru wasted no time in taking it all in. As he played in the water atop the fall he heard voices. They were hard to make out over the rushing water but Daru intended to eavesdrop. As he approached the ledge face he could see three figures standing by his parents. At first Daru thought them to be well wishers, and why not? It was of course his birthday. The reality sank in moments later as fire and ice collided. "Bandits" thought Daru as his face twisted with panic. Daru scrambled to make his way down the hill. His parents were both accomplished benders but he couldn't expect them to fight outnumbered. As Daru reached the bottom and raced towards the conflict he pulled up the biggest rock he could feel. In his distress he hadn't stopped to think that the rock he was focusing on was just about underneath him. It exploded through the surface with such force that Daru was horizontal in a split second. He hit the ground with a thud, knocking the wind from his sails. Daru sat up in a daze. The world was spinning, or was it him? He couldn't quite figure out which. As it all came into focus he saw the fight carrying on as though he were a fly on the wall. He crawled to his feet and broke towards the assailants. Unfortunately one had caught on In a blink of the eye, a long shard of ice was on its way. It was like a whip and cracked like one too. Pain, nothing but agonizing pain was to be felt. The ice has torn at Daru's face leaving a deep gash. Its jagged edge trace a line from the bottom of his left jaw to the start of his right eyebrow. Daru collapsed once more, this time however the worl wasn't spinning, it just went dark.
Daru awoke, another nightmare had plagued his dream. He sat up in his bed and brought his feet to the floor. He put his hand to his face and traced the scar. Much had changed since that day. When he woke up six years ago his mother was gone. She was still gone, but now it felt as though his father was too. It was troublesome watching his father slowly come unraveled, sometimes Daru wondered how he was still whole...almost that was. He lay back in his bed and thought of it all again. There was no more school. No more friends. Daru had become the new man of the house as his father shuffled about, barely saying more than a few words at a time. He was a guard in training and though the pay was meager, the training was compensation enough. He was breezing through and was sure at some point he would get where he needed to be. Life was...Moving along, as it usually does. It had changed in one aspect though. He had figured out a purpose to it, more than just play fighting and being a nuisance. He knew why he had gone through what he had. It was to fill him with the drive to never let that happen again. No one should be meant to feel what he had.
Seven more years had passed. Here he was on a train bound for Republic City. As he sat in his seat watching the scenery pass by, all he could do was think. His father was gone now. Death by broken heart was little more than an old story, but to him what else could it have been? He now wrestled with his own demons. Getting kicked off the Omashu guard was another sore spot but he understood. He hadn't meant for the thief to die...or did he. Daru wasn't so sure and it ate at him. Was he too slowly coming apart, keeping his mind together with false hopes and fading memories? Plenty of time to sort it all out. For now it was time for a change. One for the permanent better.
