A gentle breeze tipped over the Southern Wastes as Eru was born among the debris. However, her mother and father didn't get to live to see their baby girl grow. Both were fugitives, and both had been murdered in a raid that took place only months after she was born. How she ended up in the Northern Tribe was by tumbling towards the portal by accident. No one wanted to pick the crying infant up, except for a young healer. Ymir, that healer, ignored the stares and disgust of the others and carried her home.
Eru grew up scorned by the tribe. To them she was an outcast, a burden from the wastelands. The poor girl couldn't defend herself from it, it was not her fault that she was different, with grey eyes and paler skin compared to the rest. Children in the village are told to stay away from her by their parents, the adults eye her disdainfully wherever she went. She still had Ymir for company, but the older woman was so busy that she couldn't spend time with Eru as much as she preferred.
Everything became worse when Eru discovered she was a nonbender. Not that it stopped her, she would just have to find other means to prove herself at least a bit worthy. Ymir was already teaching her basic combat, but Eru was always a bit more interested in healing. Even if she wasn't a bender, Ymir offered to teach her basic first aid as well. Chances were rather slim on the ground, but the girl kept trying.
Unfortunately for Eru, life would not always be rainbows and sunshine for her. Not like there were any rainbows in the first place. Ymir and her were caught in the middle of a raid, and the older waterbender was killed in the crossfire. Eventually the chaos died down, but the police were paid to not do anything about the deaths, including Ymir. This horrified Eru, and angered her. The only person who accepted and loved her was dead and even for everyone else, nothing was being done by the authorities.
Eru was only 10 when this happened, so she was given custody to an orphanage. Surprisingly, it was a police officer who adopted her. This officer, however, wasn't truly heroic in any sort of way. He was a corrupt man who did nothing but abuse her, emotionally and physically. It was screwed up, as he only adopted Eru because he wanted a play toy.
For years, he did things that made Eru wish for her old life back, even to the point of raping her as she grew older. At 16, Eru only had shreds of her sanity left, and scars over scars. But she had a plan in mind. When her abuser approached her again, drunk, she had grabbed one of his knives when he wasn't looking and stabbed him as he tried to rape her again.
Eru didn't stab him until the point where it would kill him, but enough so that she could run away. She was left homeless and wandering around, surviving of scraps of food. But life for Eru was pretty cruel, because she was kidnapped after only a few weeks into freedom. This was a thug gang who kidnapped her, and along with other young girls they planned to auction as slaves, illegally. At that point she was in tears, her life seemed so shattered that she couldn't put back the pieces together anymore.
The auction took place in the lower areas of Republic City, but Eru wasn't paying much attention to her surroundings, she was too caught up in her sorrow. Pre-auctioning though, there was a bust, as a group of masked benders and nonbenders alike caused a bunch of chaos, thus preventing the auction and saving the kidnapped, including Eru. Later on she would find out that this group- her saviors, was called Faceless.
Eru and the other former slaves were taken to a local shelter. They were cared for; their wounds were tended to, they were given food and health check-ups to ensure they were all alright. Eru had never felt so shocked, but she was relieved. She was safe, everyone was safe. Danger was no where near for once, and the fact almost made her cry on the spot.
For a number of weeks Eru resided in the shelter, along with a few of the others. Once they were healthy enough, they helped around in return. Eru improved her skills in tinkering and fixing mechanical objects around the shelter. Soon enough she made herself the unofficial mechanic of the shelter.
There was a teenage guy around her age who suspiciously frequented the shelter often to check up on the girls since they were saved from that slave auctioning. At first Eru ruled it out as concern and care (the guy made pretty mean soup okay), but after a week she noticed something: his form was similar to the leader to lead that ambush at the auction. When she put two and two together, Eru was surprised.
This was the leader of Faceless. No one else seemed to know it, only her. But Eru had no doubt it was him. His name was Kairo, and at first glance, he was merely an eighteen-year-old guy who was good at cooking. But that was just the front of his image. No one knew what was beneath it.
Skipping to the chase, Eru tried to join Faceless, wanting to return the favour of saving her. However, Kairo rejected the request, as he doubted her ability to fight. Fine, Eru thought. I'll just train even harder.
Maybe two months had passed since she was shut down, but Eru did use that time to practice. She was already a skilled martial artist, having honed her techniques while she could. Once she was convinced she was ready, Eru prepared her own arsenal (secretly), put on a white mask, and began to do minor vigilant work: stopping thieves, stealing from the rich when there was an opportunity, fighting small time gangs. In that small area of the slums, Eru made a name for herself.
The nonbender hit the jackpot when Kairo found out about her secret job. How? She had just defeated two thugs from killing an innocent victim somewhere in the dark alleys of Honshi. Considering they were pretty tough, and the marks around the scene hinted that it must have been quite a fight too, Eru did well. Upon sending the victim to safety, Eru had pulled her mask off and mussed her hair up, wondering what the hell should she do with the unconscious bodies.
Kairo appeared then. He'd her of her reputation, but he never knew the person behind it was her. Eru supposed it impressed him enough to accept her joining the squad. So Eru became a part of Faceless.
It was fun working together in a group at least, Kairo was awesome. Over time they'd bonded, becoming so close it as almost like they were siblings. Even during the time Kairo's brother Titos disappeared, Eru stayed by his side and did her best to help him through it. She understood how he felt.. In fact, for a few months she even stayed in his apartment for a while to keep him company, until the Faceless headquarters was completed.
So now, Eru found a place, and she looks forward to the future.
