Mentally withdrawn from the rest of the world, Kenshi has not spoken a word since birth. His face remains expressionless, making his current mood a mystery. He's been seen to be distant towards organic life-forms, preferring the solitude of pure loneliness than the paranoia of crowds.
Kenshi, for as long as anyone can remember, was different. From his birth into the Nothern Water Tribe to present, he has never spoken. It wasn't because he was scared, nor was it a medical condition. Kenshi has been silent all his life. He didn't have much of a childhood either. His father was a very heavy drinker and very abusive towards him and his mother. Kenshi was the main target of his father's abuse, his birth apparently being the cause of their financial issues. Kenshi's mother was his only light in the darkness, her soothing voice comforting him and protecting him from his father.
Kenshi loved his mother. She was the one raising him, comforting him whenever his father was drinking. When his water-bending talents emerged, she gladly helped teach him how to control it better, since she was a water-bender herself. Whenever Kenshi was afraid, she would always give him something that always calmed him down: a white mask. Unusual as it was, it always helped him sleep at night in the dark. Whenever he needed it, it was there. Just like his mother. He loved his mother very much.
Then, when Kenshi turned 10, something terrible happened. Something that would scar him for the rest of his life. One night, Kenshi awoke to the sounds of yelling and screaming. It sounded like his mother. He hurriedly got out of bed to investigate the commotion. One mistake he'll never forget. His father, covered in blood, was hovering over his mother. A knife was seen behind his father and it, too, was stained with blood. His mother...she was broken beyond repair, her face caved in and bloody. Kenshi's father had beaten his mother to death. That moment caused something inside of him to snap. Picking up the bloodied knife, his face remaining expressionless, Kenshi plunged the knife deep into his father's back, right where his heart would be located. Even as fell to the floor dying, Kenshi continued to stab him repeatedly, blood getting on his pajamas and on his face. After his energy left him, he collapsed backwards, dropping his knife. Then, he started laughing. The first and last sound he would ever make: laughter. It began as a chuckle, becoming louder and more hysterical with each passing second. Kenshi loved his mother very much.
The authorities came soon enough to find Kenshi sitting, staring at the bodies of his parents. He was holding the bloody knife in one hand, and the white mask in the other. He was absentmindedly scratching a scar over the eye of the mask. His face remained expressionless. Whatever had snapped last time would never heal. Unfortunately, that was enough motive for them to take him in, despite how young he was. Deemed "unstable", Kenshi was placed in a mental institution. 6 years of living in a room made out bed. 6 years of wearing a straitjacket. Kenshi simply sat there in total silence, never uttering a sound. Then, when Kenshi was about in his late 16's, he was being released from the institution. Two men came into his cell, dressed him, and escorted him out of the asylum. He was being relocated to Republic City Metal Institution and the only way to get there was by train. Little did he know of the events that would transpire soon enough.
