Bender type: Firebender
Ryuko’s main worry is herself. Her survival, and what she needs to do to survive. Sometimes that means making friends and keeping them, other times it means getting rid of those she finds to be horrible people. It also means, being in control of her world. Ryuko hates when people try and control her actions, so she does everything in her power to prevent that from happening. She doesn’t speak. It might be the first thing people notice about her. She will resort to using a word every now and then, but you must be important to her if she bothers with it. She tends to to ignore people, focus on the task ahead of her. Ryuko doesn't mind making people feel inferior. The important thing to her is her survival as well as her friend's survival, but that's it. If it came down to her or them, though, she'd choose herself.
Ryuko's family were traders from the fire nation, sent to the Republic City on trading business. The family, with her father, Ryu, driving the satomobile, were peacefully on their way back from the estate of a wealthy investor of their company. Ryuko, their three and a half year old child, slept soundly in the back of the sato. The child was awoken from her slumber by the sound of screeching, and a violent crashing sound. She jumped up, and looked around. All she could hear was silence. A flame started in front of the car, and she could see her father's limp head laying on the steering wheel, and a large tree branch embedded in the window. Ryuko sobbed a little, shaking her father's limp shoulder. Getting no answer, Ryuko jumped at the sound of a popping mechanism in the vehicle she was in. Ryuko started out of the car, the door opening easily. She jumped out just as the car burst in an explosion, one she barely escaped.
In tears, Ryuko sat, screaming for help. It didn't come for hours, until finally, a hermit came up to the road, yelling over her to complain about her screaming. He stopped when he saw what the crying was about. The man, who introduced himself at Mitsaru to the young girl, asked her name, and got no answer. Ryuko found herself unable to talk. As he was about to leave, Ryuko tugged on his pant, and gave him a look that clearly asked for help. The man decided then to take in the young girl, and treat her as his own.
Mitsaru found the girl to be quite adorable, even with her muteness. He started teaching her how to use a bow at age 6, to teach her to hunt.
It was shown that she did not require her weapons as much as she thought when she was pinned down by a wolf-lion, about to be bitten, when she lashed out. Fire sparks out of her hands, cutting right into the animal's throat. Ryuko, taught at that young age to keep calm in certain situations, simply went to wash the blood off of her, and went to collect her mentor so he could bring it back to their shack and eat. She didn’t tell Mitsaru about the incident.
For the next couple of years, Ryuko started learning how to control the fire that came out of her palm and trained it when she was alone. Ryuko burnt herself a lot, mostly able to hide the cuts and scars she had gotten from Mitsaru, until one day she caught her hand, in a visible spot she couldn't hide.
Mitsaru questioned her about it. That's when she showed him her bending, not knowing what a fuss it would cause. Mitsaru freaked, calling her names for knowing how to do whatever she did, and throwing her outside for the night. Mitsaru ignored all her cries that night, and Ryuko cried herself to sleep. The next morning, Mitsaru came out to find her gone.Ryuko had walked away early that morning, sure that her ten year old self could easily make it on her own.
Needless to say, she was wrong. During her first few weeks, she found it difficult to find a place to sleep and things to hunt and eat. Still, she was determined not to go back to the man who made her feel ashamed her for something she had no control over: her bending. Ryuko attempted to prevail, no matter the circumstances. Ryuko, after those few weeks, found things to be a lot easier for her. Though she was skinny, hungry, dirty, and scared, she was also getting the hang of her bending.
One day, Ryuko ventured a little close to the road towards Republic City. Usually, this would not have been a problem, unless some fool from the city ventured too far into her forest. Unfortunately, that happened to be exactly what happened.
Ryuko hid behind a tree from what seemed to be a police officer. She vaguely remembered what those were. She decided to stay quiet, but he got a little too close. She fell back in fear, lashing out at him. The officer didn’t seem to take this very well, because in the next moment, she was unconscious.
Ryuko woke up in a white room. She definitely wasn’t sure what it was. She freaked, and felt something hold her back. Terrified, Ryuko looked at her arms and legs, and attempted to let out a scream.
‘LET ME GO!’
Nothing came out, of course. But some nurses noticed her. They attempted to calm Ryuko, telling her they could trust them. Ryuko eventually calmed down, but still didn’t let any of them touch her.
They explained that she was in the hospital, from minor injuries she had since been healed of. Ryuko listened, but didn’t speak.
The nurses continued explaining how she was found, what had happened… And what was supposed to happen. They explained about the mental health facility, the place where she’d be until she was proven not be a menace to society... Or At least until they figured out why she couldn’t talk, and they could teach her basic skills.
Ryuko had no way of protesting. The next day, she was sent out.
The first month, Ryuko underwent multiple tests, where they scored her abilities and knowledge. Ryuko excelled at the physical things, despite her very small figure. Climbing, running, but not bending. The administration decided to allow a person to teach more her while she was in the facility.
But, despite her prowess, and her comfortability with her own body, she was lacking in social skills. Ryuko could write pretty well, and read at a below average rate, which is still more than they expected, but the administration noticed pretty quickly that she was unable to speak, and unwilling to socialise by other means.
The administration had elected to continue testing her physical prowess, and working on her bending, all while Ryuko was required to go to a therapist, where she would write with the therapist, else face punishment.
After almost starving, Ryuko eventually learned that she would not get anywhere like this, so she started to oblige the rules. Back and forth, she and her therapist wrote during her sessions. Ryuko had wanted to get out of here as fast as she could, believing her two years that she had already been there to be plenty of time, and she expressed this concern to her therapist, who then explained that she had much more work to do before they even consider it.
Using this as a goal, Ryuko started learning sign language, worked to understand facial expressions, hand expressions, and body language. After a year of this, Ryuko seemed ready to leave the facility, but she was left with a condition on her freedom.
The now-thirteen year old child was to check in with a probation officer every week. She was to live in a group home, and if she misbehaved in any way, she’d be taken back into the mental facility.
So, she did what she was told to, mostly because she was scared to do otherwise. She did not want to return to that horrid place. Ryuko asked to be let off probation when she was fourteen years old, a year after she was released from the facility. The administration agreed, and Ryuko was left to fend for herself.
She opted to stay in the group home until she could find something, anything better. She was allowed to go out more, and was willing to go shopping for the home as well, which she did on a regular basis. It wasn’t long until she picked up on how important these things called Yuans were.
This eventually led to Ryuko getting an idea. Some things were worth yuans! If she snuck into houses at night, or took valuable things from stores, she could take better care of the people in the group home. Perhaps even give them the kind of life they dreamed of when hearing about the wealthy.
First, however, she had to do something important, she needed to become a full citizen of the city. Only then could she have the freedom she needed to browse for the things she needed…
