Bender type: Waterbender
Being in good physical shape and having a beautiful face, Yura is regarded by many as being attractive and handsome. He typically wears simple clothes, though, including a brown coat, black sweater, and brown pants.
Having undergone traumatizing events as a child and being experimented on at the "orphanage", Yura has been turned into a nihilistic, unfeeling monster with no identity or connections. Since he was brainwashed there into forgetting everything, including his identity, history, and all of what he once liked and disliked, the blond waterbender has become not much more than an empty shell (or as a former associate described him, a "nameless monster"). He has no joy in life. Emotional bonds, materialism, hedonistic pleasures, devotion to a higher cause -- things that motivate most people to live have utterly no meaning to Yura. It has inevitably made him cold and cruel. He has no regard for human life at all, having a nihilistic view of the universe, and seemingly has no apparent desire other than to sow chaos and suffering. That, and to try to recover his lost memories.
As a result, the he kills people without blinking an eye, as though it is nothing to him. When asked by one of his victims shortly before his death what the blond waterbender intended to do, Yura replied that he wanted to be the last one alive at the end of the world.
Despite this complex interior, he manages to maintain a good mask. Although the waterbender is not particularly outgoing or much of a socialite, Yura is charismatic and charming to those that he meets. He makes a good impression and tries to get to know people very well, being a good listener and knowing the right thing to say at the right time. Yura also appears to be passionate about the idea of justice and being a good person, occasionally helping the police indirectly to apprehend criminals, or simply going after them himself. In addition, he likes to say that the rights of children is an issue that is especially important to him, and sometimes volunteers working at orphanages and schools.
Like most psychopaths, Yura is also very intelligent and cunning. He is a skilled waterbender and also is knowledgeable about the history of the five nations, international economics and politics, as well as other subjects. One of his other abilities is being a good manipulator. Unless the target is personally important to him, the waterbender prefers not to get his hands dirty and instead manipulates other mentally unhinged individuals into doing his bidding, or gets to know the target and persuades them to commit suicide.
A man whose origins are shrouded in mystery, Yura is thought to have been born somewhere in what had once been the Southern Water Tribe. Much of his early life is unknown but it is known that he lived with clan of Wastelanders. They had lived in a village on one of the southern Earth Republic islands which they captured in one of their northward excursions for resources, but when he was eight years old their clan was attacked by the Republic Army in a counterinsurgency operation. His parents and other relatives were killed right in front of his eyes, which was the moment that the monster inside him was born. The young boy – who had started waterbending shortly before the event, and was regarded as a prodigy in the small village – ended up being captured alive and taken to the Earth Republic.
Once there, the waterbender ended up in a special orphanage run by the Earth Republic government near Gaoling. Overseen by the internal affairs ministry, it was specifically for the children of criminals, terrorists, and other assorted scum. Yura was given the common Earth Republic name of "Yang" while at the orphanage, as part of the Dai Li-style brainwashing process that was used on the children there to make them forget their past. However, Yura was able to resist some of it and managed to hold onto fragments of his memory regarding his origin. The other conditions there were terrible. The instructors were brutal and cruel, dividing the children into factions and forcing them to compete with one another, encouraging violence and hate. Beatings and starvation were commonplace.
It was in this environment that the monster which had been born during the Earth Republic Army raid on his home was forged. One of the more memorable events from this time to Yura was a game that the instructors taught them. Two people closed their eyes and walked towards each other on the edge of a rooftop. It was putting yourself into a dangerous situation in which you bet against fate. It didn't matter if you fell off or not, as long as you survived, you won. If you did, the instructors had told them, it meant you were chosen by fate and could live on to play another round of the game. It helped shape Yura's world view and he came to consider life as just one big repetition of the rooftop game, but on a much larger scale.
Luckily, one of the other things the instructors did was teach bending to those that had the gift, as it was thought that these children could be molded into perfect spies and agents for the Earth Republic government. Yura honed his skills and became among the best of the benders at the orphanage, and when he was thirteen years old he organized an uprising against the instructors. Everyone there – the children and the instructors – ended up massacring each other. Yura later said that it had been easy in a place with so much hate, as all he had to do was "add enough fuel to the flame".
Yura was the only one who survived the massacre, and all records of his existence had been destroyed along with the orphanage itself when it was lit by a firebender during the massacre. To make money and connections, Yura entered the underground, manipulating and killing the right people to earn bread, as he also focused on investigating his past which had been stolen from him at the orphanage. During this time in the Earth Republic, he went by the name "Zhang", although he still remembered his real name. By losing the memory of his life before the age of nine or ten, he had become an "unperson" of sorts, and thus came to regard names as irrelevant. It was also partly because he murdered those he found that had been affiliated with the orphanage and needed to remain anonymous. It was not until he visited Republic City that he began to go as Yura again.
Some clues the waterbender uncovered from questioning a certain government official in Ba Sing Se shortly before killing him led Yura to Republic City, where he said the man who led the raid on that waterbender village now lived in retirement. However, Yura realized that he needed to make connections and money to get by here, so he decided to put his skills to use for that purpose.
The user can create a whip of water to quickly strike at something.
The user can create a jet of water that can be used to push back or even topple others.
The user can create a small wave from a nearby source of water that can be used to crash down on something.
The user can alter the temperature of water, allowing them to cause it to boil or even freeze.
The user can alter the pressure of water, allowing them to use it to grab or strike things.
(Note: Once a power is chosen, it cannot be changed.)
The user creates claws of ice upon the tips of their fingers which can be used for striking or flung as projectiles. (Achieved after 1 week)
The user creates a wall of water in front of them that blunts and slows attacks from in front of them. (Achieved after 2 weeks)
Ice Protector(Achieved after 1 month)
The user can create a large dome of ice around them which can be used to protect them and even others from harm. The user is unable to take any other action while maintaining the dome.
The user can surround their body in a pressurized suit of water which has eight arms for offense or defense. The user cannot move while using this power.
The user can create blades of ice from water which can be used as melee or projectile weapons. While wielding these blades, the user cannot use any other waterbending techniques from their hands.
The user spreads water over their whole body and freezes it, constructing a protective suit of armor. Unlike Earth Armor, it does not restrict speed and mobility and is immensely easy to repair since it's not durable. While it can endure rather basic attacks, the armor would need constant renewal and the user can only use Ice Blades when maintaining the armor. If the user no longer desires to wear the armor, they can instantly cast it off as blast of ice shards around them or simply melt it.
(Note: Once a power is chosen, it cannot be changed. Also, Master level powers can only be achieved after 7 months and require 2 open power slots.)
The user is able to waterbend without using arm motions while bending. (Achieved after 2 months)
The user is able to bend the water in another person's body, allowing them limited control over that person. The user may only control one person at a time and cannot move while controlling them, leaving them vulnerable. Also, understanding of bloodbending has given people basic knowledge of how to fight its influence, limiting the control of a user. NOTE: This power is illegal to use. (Achieved after 7 months)
